I-25 T-REX PROJECT; DENVER, COLORADO
Client: Colorado Department of Transportation/Regional Transportation District Engineer: Southeast Corridor Constructors
In May 2001, Southeast Corridor Constructors, a Kiewit-led joint venture, was awarded the Transportation Expansion (T-REX) Project. This $1.3 billion design-build project involves reconstructing 17 miles of two interstate highways, while simultaneously adding 19 miles of new doubletrack light rail transit (LRT) line, including 13 new stations.
In addition, the multi-modal project includes the construction, or reconstruction, of 61 roadway bridges, 14 LRT bridges, three LRT tunnels, 400 utility relocations, drainage improvements, and improved pedestrian and bicycle access.
Unique aspects of the project include highway and mass transit construction, public involvement and information programs, an environmental impacts plan, and Intelligent Transportation Systems to manage traffic flow and reduce incidents.
Mass. Electric Construction, a Kiewit wholly owned affiliate, will install the Traction Electrification, signaling and communications systems, and a new Operations Control Center tying in the new and existing LRT lines.
When completed in the fall of 2006, the T-REX project will increase transit options and enhance safety, replace aging infrastructure, reduce travel time and congestion on nearby arterial streets, and support growing residential and commercial areas served by the Southeast Corridor. |
