For the past seventeen years, MEC has had an ongoing maintenance/construction T&M contract supporting Genzyme’s explosive growth. MEC, as a subcontractor to Turner Construction, is finishing up the constructing a 110,000 square foot expansion of to the Allston, MA facility.
This Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D.) certified project consists of four floors of office and lab space, a cafeteria, 1.2 MW co-gen and three new 2,500 kVA diesel generators. Special systems to be installed include Building Management Systems, fire alarm, plan control system, communication, security and a state-of-the-art lighting and blinds control package.
There were 300 people working on this project, and at it’s peak there were on average 55 MEC electricians. In order to coordinate with other trades onsite, a 3-D modeling/BIM system was used.
Genzyme’s pharmaceutical production is a twenty-four hour, seven day a week process, so all electrical work must be performed without interrupting operation - something MEC is very familiar with. MEC electricians have coordinated and setup temporary power while performing electrical upgrades and installation at labs, hospitals, water treatment facilities and on the Central Artery/Tunnel project. |
