In May 2003, Mass. Electric Construction Co. (MEC) began working on the redevelopment of Delta’s Terminal A, located at Logan International Airport in Boston, MA.
Terminal A, Logan’s oldest terminal, was originally built in 1969. This new facility is comprised of two structures, a 362,000 sqf t main terminal and a 284,000 square foot satellite terminal. These are connected by an underground pedestrian moving walkway. It is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D. ) certified airport terminal in the world.
MEC furnished and installed medium and low voltage electric systems. The security and communication systems installed meet government -mandated security requirements, issued as a result of September 11, 2001.
MEC successfully managed a work force that peaked at 180 electricians and telecom workers to meet all contract requirements and scheduled milestones. A large component of work was the supply and installation of airport special systems pathways and cabling consisting of:
- 241,000 feet conduit, wireways, and cable tray
- 100,000 feet fiber optic cable
- 600,000 feet copper cable
- 5,000 feet fiber optic terminations
MEC worked closely with the Massachusetts Port Authority (MassPort) , Skanska USA, Simplex, Johnson Controls, Signet, and Central Communications for submittal approval, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of the telecommunications, CCTV, fire alarm, and access control systems.
MEC conducted pre-activity meetings with MassPort and Skanska USA to develop an access plan to install raceways, fiber and copper to compete connectivity between the new Terminal “A” Building, the Boutwell Building, and the Control Tower.
The work was performed during normal business hours with little to no impact on daily airport operations. The project was completed on schedule in January 2005. |
