The Boston Engine Terminal is a repair and maintenance facility for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) commuter rail system. This $25 Million dollar electrical project was awarded to Mass. Electric Construction.
The eight-acre, 1,200-foot long “T” shaped building contains service, inspection and repair facilities to maintain and clean commuter rail passenger cars and diesel engine locomotives with periodic and daily inspections. Support staff offices and parts storage areas were also incorporated into the facility.
Two 15KV substations were installed in second floor electric rooms with 480 volt power distributed throughout the building to fifteen 480 volt panels at selected areas within the building. Over 6,000 light fixtures, 37 miles of conduit, and 150 miles of wire and cable were installed.
The Terminal sits within a 40 acre triangular site which was active with commuter rail service during construction. Four signal houses controlling 65 yard and main line switch machines with one grade crossing were installed and integrated into the existing commuter rail signal system.
