Location: Miami, FL

The Grand Opening of the Palmetto Extension on the morning of May 30, 2003, officially marked the completion of the Palmetto Extension Project.

The 1.4-mile Palmetto Metrorail Extension is the system's first project linking the rapid transportation system to a major state roadway. It consists of 0.7 miles of elevated guideway, rising to the elevation of 22 feet where it passed over existing highways and rail lines, 0.7 miles of at-grade track, one passenger station, and a parking lot designed to accommodate 710 cars. The double track line connects the existing Okeechobee station with the new Palmetto Station located on the west side of the Palmetto Expressway just north of N.W. 74th Street, In the Town of Medley.

As part of its $3 Million subcontract, Mass. Electric Construction performed the installation of the composite third rail contact system and a traction power substation. Also part of the contract was the installation of track circuits, ground material, and train control & communications systems.
