LYNX Blue Line

Determination
Owner: City of Charlotte
Location: Charlotte, NC

The Charlotte region entered a new era in public transportation in November of 2007 with the opening of the LYNX Blue Line. It was a monumental occasion that celebrated the culmination of years of work between CATS, the City of Charlotte, residents, community leaders and elected officials.

The LYNX Blue Line, North Carolina’s first light rail line, stretches 9.6 miles from I-485 at South Boulevard to Center City Charlotte. With 15 stations including seven park and ride locations and service every 7.5 minutes during rush hours and 15 minutes during non-rush hours, CATS designed the LYNX Blue Line to provide a congestion-free commute with a consistent travel time.

Mass. Electric Construction had two prime contracts with CATS. The Traction Electrification contract consisted of the provision of the overhead catenary system for the 9.6 miles of double track and the new yard and shop as well as the provision of 8 traction power substations. The Train Control and Communications contract included the provision of the complete train control system for the entire alignment including 8 interlockings and 18 grade crossings as well as a communications system comprised of PA, variable message signage, ticket vending, machines, CCTV, telephones, SCADA fiber optic backbone, and an integrated Operations Control Center to monitor and control the new system.
