In May of 2004, installation work was completed on this $350 million Interstate Extension of the Tri-Met Light Rail system. The contract section. The line adds nine stations and 5.8 miles of double track to the existing system.


The scope of work for Mass. Electric Construction included the provision and installation of the of overhead contact system; 7 traction power substations; and an ABS signal system with 3 interlockings, 4 signal rooms, 14 switches, ATS, and TWC. Additionally, MEC installed the SCADA/Communications system with CCTV, modifications to the Control Center at Ruby Junction, and communications fiber optic cable, system wide.


The project required working safely with constant vehicular and pedestrian traffic in a busy inner city setting. The alignment ran down the center of Interstate Avenue with traffic on each side and cross traffic at 26 crossing locations. The total project finished four months ahead of schedule and $25 million under budget.
