Frankford Transportation Center

FTC
Location: Philadelphia, PA

The $187 million Frankford Transportation Center (FTC) project was the largest single site construction project ever undertaken by SEPTA.

The FTC underwent complete reconstruction. The new FTC terminal building was unveiled to customers for the first time on August 4, 2003, following a nine-day service outage - dubbed the Frankford Swing - when El service temporarily stopped at Margaret-Orthodox Station. During the Swing, the new elevated structure was connected to the existing structure at Dyre Street and the existing overhead structure between Bridge and Dyre Streets was demolished.

Mass. Electric Construction played a pivotal role in the planning and execution of the “Frankford Swing”. All systems had to be connected and tested during the very short outage. MEC performed the installation of the contact rail, traction power substations, and the train control and communications systems.

Performing the last scheduled work without problem, MEC demonstrated why it is considered the pre-eminent electrical contractor in North America.
