Mass. Electric Construction is prime contractor for the $40 Million Central Light Rail Link Traction Electrification System (TES). This project was initially 14.2 miles long, but has been extended to 16.1 miles by change order to extend the line from Tukwila to SEA-TAC Airport. MEC is also performing the Communications System installation under a separate subcontract.


The TES contract provides a complete traction electrification system including ten 3,000 KW 1500 VDC traction power substations, one traction power tie station, and one 500 KW shop traction power substation. Mass. Electric is installing 9,000 feet of 500 MCM 5KV AC cabling and 10,000 feet of 500 MCM 26kV AC cabling, and 130,000 feet of 500 MCM 5 kV DC cable, including all splicing, terminations, and testing.
 

Also included is the complete overhead contact system to distribute the traction power to the trains throughout the project, including the Yard includes over 820 poles and 215,000 feet each of messenger and contact wire.


A substantial portion of the work involved the conversion of the existing Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel from bus to a joint use light rail and bus tunnel which required new AC unit substations and modifications of existing AC substations. Contract progress is on schedule for a December 2008 completion.
