Children's Hospital - Waltham

Owner: Children's Hospital Medical Center
Engineer: Collaborative Engineers
General Contractor: G. Greene Construction Company
Location: Waltham, MA

On June 30, 2008, MEC started work at Children’s Hospital Boston in Waltham on the installation of two generators, and updating the wiring within the hospital, which was built in the 1950’s.
The original project design had several challenges, so MEC presented a redesign to the Owner, which was accepted. This new project design saved the hospital money and added space for a future generator to be installed.
MEC worked with other subcontractors to take care of the rigging, testing and seismic, and coordination studies. One specific challenge was laying out the ductbanks and stub up locations to match the conduit openings under the generator enclosures, and under the distribution equipment inside the building. The crew took multiple measurements and successfully set the generators into place without losing any pipes - a major accomplishment on any project.
Working over 11,400 labor hours without an incident, MEC crews:
• Pulled over 10,000 feet of MI cable, sized from #10-#250
• Pulled 82,832 ft of cable sized from #1-#600
• Installed nine (9) new Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)
• Installed a 360 ft J-shaped ductbank with 27-4” and 8-2” conduits
• Installed two (2) new generators and generator sync board
• Installed a new emergency switchboard & normal switchboard
• Installed all associated wiring to cut over existing emergency systems to the new system
• All work took place within an active hospital, without impacting the daily routine of the staff - or patients.
This project originally had an estimated end date of December 30, 2009. However, Owner requested change orders pushed the project to June 30, 2010.
