Upon entering the work zone at the Brayton Point Closed Loop Cooling Project, the most impressive sight to behold is the view of the two cooling towers being constructed. Cooling Towers 51 and 52 are being constructed to provide a closed-loop cooling system for the water that is used by the 1,537mw Brayton Point Power Plant. Currently, water is drawn and released from Mt. Hope Bay. The completed towers will cool and recycle the water back in to the power plant. In August 2008, the internal joint venture of MEC, together with Eastern District and several other Kiewit districts began working on the design of this Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) project with the engineering team of Kiewit Power Engineers. In February 2009 crews moved onto the project site in Somerset, MA. MEC’s role on the project is as exclusive electrical contractor. Work has included installation of 5kV temporary lighting, a lightning protection system, a radio de-tuning system and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lights. Current major construction includes a new 115kV substation which will require us to tie into the existing overhead line, as well as installation of new transmission lines underground. We, are also providing the electrical construction in the Upper Discharge Basin (UDB), the Pump House, the Chemical Feed Building, the Blow Down Building and other supporting structures. |
