"Raytheon working with JDSU in early September completed a fiber characterization study to certify our physical fiber plant for planned DWDM implementations. We found during this study that seven of our nine spans failed to meet telcordia specifications for DWDM in reference to OIL (Optical Insertion Loss) and ORL (Optical Return Loss). JDSU communicated recommendations in reference to improvements that would change these results. Recommendations included replacing splice cases where high loss were found as well as replacing more than 100 fiber ends. This work under normal circumstances would have resulted in months of planning, not to mention the time to implement the changes.
I was informed by my management that this had to be done and the fiber retested by year's end to accommodate our planned hardware refresh (DWDM implementations) in 2009. I approached John Callanan in late September and we drafted a plan to work weekends and weeknights to complete all required maintenance without impacting Raytheon's production network. To make a long story short, we completed the replacement of 108 fiber ends at nine different locations, replaced more than 8 splice cases and isolated and corrected micro bends in less than 6 weeks. It is important to note that this was done with no impact to Raytheon's production network. Our production ring was wrapped more than 20 times and recovered without issue each time.
I credit the success of this project to John Callanan, Kevin Michaud and Peter Walat. Many nights and weekends were surrendered to ensure the overall success of the project. In six weeks, there was never a time when a 'whatever it takes' attitude was not displayed. I just wanted to take a minute to make sure the folks involved were recognized for the outstanding support and dedication they displayed in getting this done."
– Douglas Flynn, Principal Network Engineer, Enterprise Network Services
