Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project – Phase 2
Fairfax County and Loudoun County, Virginia
The Dulles Phase 2 project consisted of an 11.4-mile extension of WMATA’s Silver Line from Wiehle Ave. to Ashburn Station in northern Virginia. The right of way was made of up 8.4 miles of at-grade track and three miles of aerial guideway. There were size new passenger stations including one new station at Dulles International Airport.
Mass. Electric Construction Co. (MEC) installed all rail systems including automatic train control (ATC), traction electrification system (TES) and communications throughout all aspects of the project. MEC was responsible for the installation, testing and commissioning of eight prefabricated traction power substations, six prefabricated tie breakers, and one stick-built substation located at the Dulles airport station.
The ATC system included the installation, testing and commissioning of 14 train control rooms, of which 8 were prefabricated and 6 were contained within the passenger stations. The communications system and SCADA work included all station devices, passenger information displays, public address system, CCTV, fire alarm, cabling, terminations and testing.
