As part of the 20-mile, four-new-line double tracked light rail extension to the Houston Light Rail System, Mass. Electric Construction Co. (MEC) provided a design-build systems package, and was contracted to furnish and install the specialized systems transit work.

MEC’s scope of work included 20 miles of overhead catenary consisting of nearly 1,000 OCS poles, 1,500 cantilevers, and 455,000 linear feet of messenger/contact wire, as well as nine signal interlockings, 38 grade crossings with warning gates, 17 traction power substations, 250,000 linear feet of fiber optic cable and communication devices such as CCTVs, a public announcement system, and variable message signs at twenty-four (24) passenger stations.
